What is one of the best way to live Rome? I think enjoying the street food and the food markets give you the way to eat good and affordable dishes. Here in Rome there are many food markets where people can purchase fruit and vegetable in season, fish, meat, etc. Here you can find some typical Roman dishes like for example the “Pecorino”, our sheep’s milk cheese, whose main characteristic is the drop you see when you cut it (pecorino con la lacrima). You can eat pecorino with bread. We have a tradition according to which the first day of May we eat pecorino with bean (“fava“). You can also enjoy the famous “Porchetta” which is roast sucking-pig. You can make a sandwich (panino) with “porchetta” using a particular bread: ciriola or casareccio. It is tasty!

Another typical and energetic food is white pizza (“pizza bianca” which is not “focaccia”) with green figs (“fichi”). You buy the green figs, you go to the baker’s stand and buy the white pizza. Then you ask the baker “to open” the pizza bianca so you can put the green figs inside. It’ stunning! This was my favourite snack when I studied at university. We like very much also white pizza with Bologna sausage (“mortadella“) which is a typical Roman coupling even if the mortadella is not from Rome.

So this is our typical street food that you can make by yourself. These foods have many calories but they are healthy.
